ENVIS RESOURCE PARTNER (RP) ON BIODIVERSITY

BOTANICAL SURVEY OF INDIA

Ministry of Environment & Forests vide their Letter No. 4(25)/83-ENVIS, dated 18th March, 1994 approved setting-up of an Environmental Information System (ENVIS) Centre on "Plant Ecology" at Industrial Section, Indian Museum, Botanical Survey of India, Calcutta – 700 016. However, since September 2002, this Centre has been functioning from Central National Herbarium Building, 3rd Floor, Botanical Survey of India, P.O. Botanic Garden, Howrah – 711 103, and is presently rechristened as ENVIS RP on "Biodiversity". 

 

Mandate of the ENVIS RP: Systematic collection and compilation of data (mainly secondary data) on “Floral Diversity” and disseminate the data depending on the mandate of the ENVIS, i.e., collect, collate and disseminate the data through ENVIS Website, which will be immensely helpful to various academic and research institutes, research scholars and students in respective field and also to common people, who are interested in this field.

LIST OF WORK DONE BY THE ENVIS CENTRE ALONE (UNIQUE TO ENVIS) WHICH ARE NOT BEING COVERED BY THE HOST ORGANISATION

 

The ENVIS Centre, BSI has been primarily working on secondary data according to the mandate of the ENVIS, i.e., collect, collate and disseminate the data through ENVIS Website

 

  • All the databases prepared by the ENVIS Centre, which are reflected through website are solely maintained and updated by the ENVIS Centre, and the data are taken from the secondary sources
  • Bibliography and Abstract of the papers on Flora of different states of India are collected solely by the ENVIS Centre and also published the same every year. All the published Bibliography and Abstracts are also reflected at Website in Bibliography module
  • Glossary of Botanical terms and Abbreviations
  • List of State-wise distribution of Threatened and Endemic taxa: Data which have already been uploaded in the database for 24 states will be sent to the experts for their opinion on changes regarding inclusion (of new) or exclusion (already listed) of taxa from the list.
  • The Centre has been regularly publishing Newsletter which is a unique publication module of the ENVIS Centre
  • News clippings on issues related to environment, biodiversity and conservation published in various Newspapers have been uploaded in Website in News watch module 
  • A database on a Specialisation-wise List of Experts from Botanical Survey of India as well as from other organisations is introduced.
