Report on the Awareness campaigning programme conducted on
‘Conservation of mangroves of Sundarban Biosphere Reserve’
An one day awareness campaigning programme on ‘Conservation of mangroves of Sundarban Biosphere Reserve’ was held at Sundarban Hazi Desarat College, Pathankhali, Gosaba, South 24-Parganas in collaboration with ENVIS Resource Partner on Biodiversity (Flora), Botanical Survey of India (Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change, Government of India, New Delhi), Howrah on 24th March, 2022. A total of 137 participants along with 17 Faculty members participated in this awareness programme.
On 24th March, 2022, the programme started with the welcome address from Dr. Sudipa Das, Asst. Professor, Dept. of Botany, Sundarban Hazi Desarat College followed by a brief introduction about the programme by Dr. Tarun Mandal, Principal, Sundarban Hazi Desarat College, Gosaba, South 24-Parganas. Dr. K. Karthigeyan, Scientist ‘E’, CNH, BSI & In-charge, ENVIS RP on Biodiversity (Flora), BSI highlighted the importance of mangroves in his introductory speech during the inaugural session. After the inauguration, Dr. Animesh Maji, Research Associate, Botanical Survey of India delivered an interesting lecture on ‘Diversity and Conservation of Mangroves of Sunderban Biosphere Reserve’. The students and faculty members thoroughly enjoyed the lecture and actively participated in the discussion at the end of the lecture. After the lecture, Mr. Motiyur Rahaman, Lab. Instructor, Dept. of Botany provided his view on the programme and its relevance in the current scenario. Dr. K. Karthigeyan, Scientist ‘E’, CNH, BSI & In-charge, ENVIS RP on Biodiversity (Flora), BSI handed over the Publication of ENVIS RP, BSI to the Principal, Dr. Tarun Mandal of Sundarban Hazi Desarat College.
Dr. Tarun Mandal, Principal, Dr. Uttam Kumar Guru, IQAC Co-ordinator, Dr. Sudipa Das, Asst. Professor, Dept. of Botany Sundarban Hazi Desarat College and other faculty members extended all possible support and provided all the available facilities for the programme. On behalf of organising committee, Sundarban Hazi Desarat College, Dr. Anisha Mitra, Dept. of Zoology expressed her gratitude to Dr. K. Karthigeyan, Scientist ‘E’, CNH, BSI & In-charge, ENVIS RP on Biodiversity (Flora), BSI, as well as the resource person and the entire team members of ENVIS Resource Partners on Biodiversity (Flora), BSI for organising the awareness programme. The programme was ended with vote of thanks by Dr. Uttam Kumar Guru, IQAC Co-ordinator, Sundarban Hazi Desarat College.
The participants expressed that the programme helped them to understand the importance of mangrove and their diversity. Dr. K. Karthigeyan, Dr. Tarun Mandal and Mr. Motiyur Rahaman also awarded certificates to the winner of slogan writing competition which was organised by the Green Cell of Sundarban Hazi Desarat College on the occasion of 21st International Day of Forest.
