Botanical Survey of India , the parent organization of the ENVIS Centre on Floral Diversity , is a premier organization under the Ministry of Environment and Forest , carrying out survey and documentation of the vast floristic resources of the country and also undertakes studies on selected critical and fragile ecosystems.

The Centre is functioning  under the administrative control of Director, BSI and   Dr. P. Lakshminarasimhan, Deputy Director, BSI, (CNH) is looking after the Centre as Scientist-in-Charge from January 2010. Four Project Personnel  are working in the project on man-hour basis.  

The Centre is engaged in collecting data on plant diversity, plants of coastal & marine ecosystem, rare & endangered plants of India and on plants of medicinal  & ethno botanical importance. A software COBOMAN for input of  database on rare and threatened plants in India with maps and a database on ethno botanical importance plants have been developed.  15(1) volumes of ENVIS Newsletter, two Abstract and three books including a  voluminous work on Diversity of Coastal Plant communities in India have been published from this center.
